Humphrey Pakington of Harvington Hall needs your help!

The year is 1590 and Queen Elizabeth I has been on the throne for 32 years!

She has made it illegal for Catholic priests to set foot in England, if they are caught, they will be executed.

Catholic men and women have started to build priest hides in their houses; however, the priest hunters may come knocking at their door at any time!

The priest hunters will arrive with a signed warrant from the queen allowing them to search the house. Once they are in, they could be there for as long as 12 days. Catholics need to make sure that the secret hiding places are so clever that

no man could find them. These hiding places are known as priest hides or holes and Humphrey Pakington needs someone with a clever design to build him a hide.

The Competition

We are now coming out of the lockdown but can you imagine being stuck in a priest hide for days? With very little food or water and having no daylight. The worst part of being caught is being put in prison, tortured and then executed!

We are looking for children up to the age of 16 to imagine they are a carpenter in 1590, with the task of designing and building an ingenious priest hide for Humphrey Pakington at Harvington Hall.

You can build the hide with Lego or any other materials you want. All entries must be submitted by midnight on Thursday 1st October 2020.

The winner will receive a family pass for a free day out at Harvington, including a free Tour with one of our family friendly tour guides showing you all the ingenious hides at Harvington and giving you a behind the scenes tour. The kids will

get a chance to dress like a Tudor for the day and see what life was really like for the Tudors.*

We will showcase the best models on our website and social media platforms. The winners from each age group will be decided by a panel of judges, and will then be contacted by Friday 16th October 2020, via email.

There are two age categories 5 to 10yrs – 11 to 16yrs.

In order to enter, email pictures with a short description of how it works, plus name and age of applicant to harvingtonhall@rcaob.org.uk titled ‘Priest hide competition’.

Good luck everyone!

*A family pass includes 2 adults and 2 children up to the age of 16. The winners day out must be arranged with the Hall Manager in advance, to arrange time and availability. Please note that this will be subject to availability once the Hall is open.
