The Gloucester Waites at Christmas

18th December 3.00pm till 5.30pm

The Waites of Gloucester recreate the town band that played for the Mayor and citizens of Gloucester in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. Generally playing music from the 1500s and 1600s.

The Waites use modern reproductions of historical instruments: recorders, curtals, shawms, crumhorns, bagpipes, rebec, etc.

The Gloucester Waites’ Christmas presentations aim to introduce seasonal music from earlier times.  Some of it  will almost certainly be unfamiliar, but they will also incorporate a few more familiar tunes.  Much of this music is best described as ‘traditional’ because its origin is within the oral traditions of folk-music, but other pieces belong to the culture of literate polyphony of the late Renaissance.

At Christmas we are pleased to be joined by soprano, Karen Jones, who will sing some of the music which we would usually only be able to present instrumentally.

During the interval you will be served tea/coffee and homemade mince pies
